Lead telecoms regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved a new pricing scheme for type approval of telecommunications equipment to take effect from July 1, 2021.
NCC Act makes it mandatory that every digital device that enters Nigeria through the legal channels must get approval from the 8Commission before they are pushed into the Nigerian telecoms market.
In a notice to stakeholders, the NCC noted that If a device falls into multiple equipment categories, the equipment class corresponding to the higher billing class applies saying that type approval fee for equipment variants are 20% of the fee that applies to the family/series of such devices.
According to the Director of Technical and Network Integrity, Engr. Bako Wakil the type approval process of the NCC for mobile device was instituted by the Commission to prevent the proliferation of substandard mobile device in the country.
“The proliferation of such substandard mobile devices are not allowed into the Nigerian telecoms industry saying that if mobile devices are not properly regulated in the industry, user experience will continue to fade, he said. Source:businesshighlights
