Canada’s International Students Protest New Immigration Policies.

Tens of thousands of international students took to the streets across Canada, protesting new immigration policies that have left many fearing deportation.
The demonstrations, which drew approximately 70,000 students, occurred in major provinces including Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia.
Background
In 2021, Canada abolished the Post-Graduation Work Permit program, which allowed international students to gain work experience after completing their studies. Last year, the government introduced a two-year cap on international student visas, expected to reduce foreign student intake by 35%. As of 2023, international students made up 37% of study visa holders in Canada.
Fears of Deportation
Student advocacy groups, including the Naujawan Support Network, warn that many international graduates face deportation once their work permits expire. The Canadian government’s decision to no longer allow foreign nationals to apply for a PGWP at the border has sparked fears among students. Mehakdeep Singh, a former international student facing deportation, expressed frustration, saying, “I spent six years taking risks to come to Canada… but the government has taken advantage of us.”
Provincial Policies and Immigrant Worker Rallies
New provincial policies, including a 25% reduction in permanent residency nominations, further limit pathways for international students to remain in Canada. Immigrant workers have also staged rallies in cities like Brampton, countering claims they contribute to local housing and job crises.source:Africaeye.
