Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have given resounding endorsements of Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention, urging party supporters to vote in November to defeat Donald Trump.
In back-to-back speeches, the Obamas praised Ms Harris while criticizing Trump’s presidency as “bluster and chaos”.
They warned Democrats not to be complacent, stressing the election will be decided in key swing states.
Michelle Obama emphasized the need for overwhelming voter turnout, saying: “We need to vote in numbers that erase any doubt.”
Barack Obama expressed confidence in Ms Harris, saying: “We are ready for a President Kamala Harris. And Kamala Harris is ready for the job.”
The Obamas’ appeal exposed party anxiety about the tight race between Ms Harris and Trump, who retains a loyal base of supporters.
Ms Harris has a slender lead in national polling averages, but the race remains a virtual tie in battleground states.
The Obamas acknowledged the renewed excitement within the party since Ms Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the candidate.
Michelle Obama attacked Trump for his divisive rhetoric and policies, while also remembering her late mother, Marian Robinson.
