South Africa’s ANC Expels Ex-President Jacob Zuma For Leading Rival Party.

South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) has expelled former President Jacob Zuma from the party after disciplinary proceedings. The decision comes after Zuma led a rival party, Mkhonto weSizwe (MK), into elections, which the ANC says is “irreconcilable” with its constitution.

ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula announced the expulsion at a press conference, stating that Zuma had “actively impugned the integrity of the ANC” and campaigned to dislodge the party from power while claiming to still be a member.

Zuma’s endorsement of MK in January led to his initial suspension from the ANC. MK went on to secure 14.5% of the vote in the May 29 elections, cutting into the ANC’s share and forcing it to form a coalition government.

The ANC, which has lost its absolute parliamentary majority for the first time, views MK as a populist and radical leftist threat, with Mbalula describing Zuma’s platform as “dangerous” and capable of fomenting social unrest.

Zuma, who has been barred from serving as an MP due to a 2021 contempt of court conviction, now faces expulsion from the party he once led.
